The route is fairly flat and doesn't tend to get too affected by bad weather so is a great option on more rainy weekends. It begins in the picturesque village of Weathampstead, before heading into natural terrain. At the north-west end of South Heath, you will see a footpath to your left which leads to some wooden steps. This walk features the home of famous playwright George Bernard Shaw, which you can visit along the way. Starting at Danemead Wood car park, head north along the byway which is called Brickendon Liberty Restricted Byway. Unfortunately no one has marked the line but it's pretty amazing to know that you're standing on it. Follow until a T-junction, take a right-hand turn and follow the yellow arrows. The walking route takes in the surrounding classic Chiltern Hills, with peaceful rolling hills and valleys, the pretty River Chess, chalk streams, water meadows, watercress farm, and plenty of wildlife to enjoy. At this point you join a raised walkway which continues along a boardwalk to the concrete footbridge over Mimmshall Brook. Then you head in the direction of the town centre and take the footpath along the river, just before the Riverside Bridge. Although relatively short, this route takes in stunning scenery, prehistoric burial mounds and picturesque villages. Head northwest and you will find yourself walking through farmland and woodland before arriving in Flaunden. If not, the path continues round the lake before leaving it and heading back towards the road bridge. Continue north until you reach Coopers Lane Road, where you turn right along a path until Hook Lane, where you turn left and continue north again. The views over the Beacon area are reminiscent of South Downs Way. Turn right on this lane and look out for a footpath to your left before a bend in the road. Cross the A1(M) on the footbridge and then cross Swanland Road and take the cut through to Warrengate Road Turn left on Warrengate Road and head north-west past the pumping station and look out for a footpath sign on the right (North Mymms footpath 11 - also known as Wise's Lane). Cross over the footbridge over the River Ash and take the path that will take you south-east until you reach a bridge under the road with gates marked as Lee Valley Park. Follow the path left, and then left again, past the Ray Brook, before reaching Gobions Pond, where you can return to the car park easily. Follow the signposted footpath with the little yellow arrows on the posts until you cross Sparrowhall Bridge. The rolling estate of Ashridge is owned by National Trust and has a variety of terrains to explore including woodland, meadows and chalk downs, forming part of an area of outstanding natural beauty. Following a footpath behind here, pass under the M25 and at the corner of the yard by Moor Mill Lane, turn left to follow the clear path through the former sand and gravel washing plant area to Hyde Lane.
